What bugs me is that a device that has 12 months worth of history has now been picked up as new device because of an ip change. I know a network as diverse as the one I'm apart of will never scan 100% accurate, I can live with that. I too have been puzzled by the way a device is identified, given the choice of name (which can be changed) ip-address (which is most likely to change) or mac-address (which is hard coded, and really, not a simple thing to change) why the option chosen was chosen. Interesting thread and even though old, I still got here searching for a solution to the same problem. SO the question I guess is why the new behavior and how do we get it to scan a machine when spiceworks is not looking at the real machine? I AM NOT deleting the other machines just because they share the same IP. With V7, we have to put in the IP, which scans and only looks at its internal database and which machines have that IP, so the scan goes through and I go look and nothing shows updated on the current machine.

We would then add the PO the PC was purchased under, date and cost of machine. Pre v7 we simply put in the machine name, I assume via DNS it resolved the current and correct IP address, all was good. We don't have time for it to do its normal scan, so we always manually scan the device. So we reimage/build lots of machines, some do not stay on our network very long, others are new so as part of our build process, the last step is to get Spiceworks to scan it so its listed in inventory. This started as more of a rant than a request to troubleshoot.but still.and it was supposed to be craptacular.misspelling on my part lol. There's always room to improve with anything, but as it stands, I am very happy with what the inventory scan is able to provide me. It would be really nice to be able to use the device name as the key and if the device name is unavailable on a scannable device, then the MAC address would be a preferable alternative rather than the (often dynamic) IP address.ĮDIT: I should also add that while the scanning is not *QUITE* as flexible as it would be in my fictional techtopian universe, I do not think that it sucks.

This is obviously pure speculation, but sometimes it seems like it's using the IP address as the key in the inventory database. I'm using LDAP with AD, so it's weird that the IP address plays such a heavy role in the scan. Every once in a while I'll go in and clear out all of the "unscannables" and refresh the inventory in hopes that the missing machines will reappear.
